2004 Doc Scott feature (Knowledge Magazine issue 2.46)
After a few tough knocks Doc Scott is back with a vengeance with his faith in drum & bass as strong as ever.
Incredible as it may seem, Knowledge has never actually interviewed Doc Scott before. This may seem a pretty strange state of affairs considering he's undoubtedly one of the most important and influential players on the drum & bass scene but it's true nonetheless. In our defence, however, Doc is also known for being media shy preferring instead to let his music do the talking.
The general consensus seems to be that 2004 has started well for drum & bass and will be a year of positive change and growth, so what better time to catch up with the man affectionately known as the 'king of the rollers' to get his take on things. Like Blame, who is also interviewed in this issue of Knowledge, 2003 was a period of consolidation and planning for Doc and this year will see the fruits of those labours as both his 31 Records label and own productions step up a gear.
Far from being media shy, we found Doc only too ready to talk about the scene he loves. It's certainly true that he is in many ways a private man and is not exactly falling over himself to talk to the dance music press but sit down with him for five minutes and his passion for the music quickly comes shining through. He may have a reserved side to his nature but when it comes to drum & bass he's got plenty to say and won't pull any punches.
It's the same story with 31 Records (there's no significance to the name, by the way - it simply refers to the date of his birthday). When Knowledge caught up with him in his hometown of Coventry recently we got to hear some of the forthcoming releases on the label and can ensure you that 31's reputation for quality stands little chance of being challenged on this evidence.
Artificial Intelligence, Friction, Total Science, XRS, Commix, Baron and Ill Logic & Raf all have singles scheduled for 2004, along with new artists like Stranjah from Canada, Telefunken from Brazil and Concord Dawn from New Zealand. Doc himself will also be releasing new material and a 'King Of The Rollers' mix CD is planned for April. All these artists have their own individual musical styles, of course, but what characterises every track is the depth of the music. There's a certain substance to each track, a real swing. They all have a really solid groove and that essential funk irrespective of what style they are and you can't help feeling that they've gone the whole nine yards when Doc asked them to produce something for 31.
"It was a nightmare but we got out of it and 2003 was focused on getting things right," he continues. "We moved over to ST Holdings and we basically relaunched 31 Records to try and get it back to the level where it was at before. We're not prolific in the amount of our releases but I'd like to think we have a good quality threshold. To be honest, I'd taken myself out of the loop a little bit towards the end of 2002. I was pissed off with being owed money and like anything you've been doing for a long time, there are times when you're not into it as much. A few things happened one after another and I stopped answering my phone; it didn't seem that long at the time but it was actually about three months."
Doc was still being sent tunes, of course, and early 2003 he plugged himself back in the loop. It was during this period that the idea for the 'King Of The Rollers' series was born. Doc realised there was a lot of good new music out there and he also approached a few people saying the label was back and ready to go, so would they like to contribute something to the series. The vast majority of those he asked agreed and within a space of two to three months Doc had pulled together around 25 quality tracks. Four EPs later and 'King Of The Rollers' has well and truly put 31 Records back on the map. In fact, it well exceeded his initial expectations and 'Vault' by Pendulum went on to become one of the anthems of 2003.
Throughout this period Doc has still been DJing, of course, and, particularly since he's one of the of DJs who actually plays more overseas than in the UK, he's been able to get a good perspective on how the scene stands as a whole: "The scene in London and southern England is completely different to how it is abroad. There are certain aspects of the UK scene that are worrying. In fact, my main concern going into 2004 is that the music is becoming a little too fast. I've gone on after DJs who are playing at over 190bpm and at 200bpm it becomes gabba. If drum & bass becomes gabba it's not drum & bass anymore. It's dangerous because we're reaching that critical mass point. You can only go so fast, so loud and so hard, and drum & bass is only three or four paces away from that critical mass moment. If you break that barrier you're in very dangerous territory and it could split the scene.
"Drum & bass is strong and it's healthy but it doesn't need a split like there was in the mid-90s. You go on the internet now and you'll see kids moaning about clownstep! At the end of the day, speed is the issue. I like a broad spectrum of music and I like it hard - 31 will always put out hard stuff - but hard and fast aren't the same thing. If DJs think the only way to amp up the crowd is to amp up the tempo, it's a cop-out, it's a cheap thrill."
Doc also has issues with DJs only being given short sets because promoters pack out the line-up and believes in order to bring new supporters and build a long-term fan base for drum & bass you need to give longer sets. Again, 45-minutes is a critical mass point for DJ set times and Doc believes that 90 minutes should be the minimum bearing in mind the highly competitive nature of the UK scene. When he plays overseas it's another matter and he cites New Zealand as an excellent example of where DJs play a much longer set. In fact, when he plays for the Subtronix crew out there he's played up to six-hour sets right across the board: "I pride myself on having a lot of music and that's why I still love what I do. I have a passion and hunger for always finding new music and always having a wide variety of music; when I've got a crowd that are enjoying hearing new music I'll carry on playing as long as I can."
Australia, particularly on the west coast around Perth, Moscow and eastern Europe in general are all places where Doc loves to plays. In fact, last New Year's Eve in Budapest is among his top three nights of 2003. A lot of these places have only heard drum & bass in the last couple of years and so it's still very fresh and exciting: "There's no doubt that when you first hear drum & bass it's very exciting. It's unique and an amazing amalgamation of all these other forms of music at a crazy tempo that it really shouldn't be at. There are all these crazy sounds and frequencies but it works. The beauty of drum & bass, especially if you've been there from the beginning, is that it's forever unpredictable. Of course there's some crap tracks at the moment - when has there never not been bad music around - but I also think there's some amazing tunes out there."
Japan and the USA are also places where Doc plays on a regular basis and has several long-standing relationships with overseas promoters where he is invited back again and again. Meanwhile, Fabric Live and LTJ Bukem's Progression Sessions at The End, where he plays a couple of times a year to a slightly older crowd, are both nights he particularly enjoys playing back in the UK. You don't tend to see him playing at the big raves, however.
Doc also believes the internet has been very important in stimulating debate within drum & bass, most notably through forums like Dogs On Acid and Drum & Bass Arena, and has even been known to do the odd Q&A session on there himself. 31 Records are also in the process of setting up their own website which should be online by May. Now that 31 Records is back up to speed, his main goal for 2004 is to get back into the studio himself and he's currently working on tracks in his new home studio. He still sees himself particularly as a DJ rather than a producer and he can hardly be described as prolific. Then again, tracks like 'Shadow Boxing' are seminal moments in the history of drum & bass and you can tell he's just itching to get back into the studio to show us what he can do: "It's been far too long since I've put anything out for various reasons and I've got loads of ideas in my head. Ideally, I would like to get the bulk of an album done this year - that's the goal. I need to and I want to get back in the studio."
Before that there'll be a four-track EP released towards the end of 2004 and Doc will be able to concentrate on his own productions now he has the release schedule for 31 pretty much in the bag. He believes that the label has released some good music and some important music, and wants it to do so again. 31's back catalogue is certainly something to be proud of but Doc's still as keen as ever to hear new artists: "That's another beauty of the internet and I find a lot of new music that way. That's how I got 'Vault' - I was sitting there at 3am one day and this amazing track came down the line! I set up an auto-expect folder on AIM every Monday morning and I'll receive between 40 and 80 tracks every week from all over the world.
"It's not been an intentional thing but the label really does represent the global nature of the scene at the moment and for me that's what drum & bass needed. It's great that everyone's out there DJing all over the world but the music wasn't coming back. It was wrongly perceived by a lot of people outside the UK that we had a closed shop system going on but that was never the case. Now other countries have more than caught up and some of their guys are the frontrunners."
