EQUAL-I
One of the main ANOKHA DJs to come out of the legendary Blue Note club in London, Dave Equal I spins a global jam of Indian, African and Brazilian percussive sounds gathered from his inheritance of a Jamaican dub soaked childhood and the international soundz off London.
Raised in the dust of south London suburbia of Indian - Jamaican parentage, he was mixing on his parents record player at the age of eight and was creating tape loops at twelve. Gathering influences from a variety of sounds including 80Õs indie like CoctauÕs to jazz, funk,world music and Drum & Bass.
Equal I is at ease playing Indian classical ambesonics in cerebral joints like CALCUTTA CYBER CAFE in the cool-end of London (Brick Lane) or raising the roof of the four corners of the world touring with ANOKHA - the symbiosis sound system from London.
As a DJ he has toured throughout the UK and Europe and represented the Anokha sound in Japan playing at THE LIQUID ROOMS in Tokyo. He has worked closely with Talvin Singh and Cleveland Watkiss in spreading the nu-global sound world wide. With a track, EQUATION on the ANOKHA - SOUNDZ OF THE ASIAN UNDERGROUND album, he also worked closely with Talvin Singh on his ÔOKÕ project. Recently he has worked with LELONEK on his ground breaking forthcoming album.
At present EQUAL-I is producing tracks for the launch of Talvins long awaited label OMNI as well as writing soundtracks for a television documentary and has contributed tracks to the forthcoming ANOKHA 2 compilation due out early 2000.
EQUAL-I is the man of the moment, cutting and pasting textures and tones in a seamless cross-culturalisation that unerringly nits the nerve of the underground movement. Sweat drenched dance floors around the globe is a testimony to his skill as a versatile performer.

Writer, DJ and student of the sarod (very early days). Longtime resident of Anokha; copilot of Calcutta Cyber Caf (Vibe Bar / ICA); sometime collaborator with photographers, dancers, designers and perfumiers. Organiser of purist classical sounds and ruthless manipulator of the strictly nonclassical (kaoss pad in full fx); expatriate member of the Viennese laptop mafiosi.
After trying my hand in a few techno parties, I stumbled across Talvin and Anokha in 1996 and my DJ-self found home. The Blue Note was a place of extreme possibilities, and full of people exploring them: Nelson Dilation was cutting up Shakti & Shankar in ridiculous tempi, Squarepusher drumming on his bass, State of Bengal had a golden touch then . . . that club is sadly missed. But Anokha survived on to the End, and now Fabric.11-11-99 will tell . . .
My sound: ethereal-sonorous-effulgent with the odd beat thrown in for half-measure. Plenty of electronic music, laced with lethal rhythms from North/West Africa and South Asia. At times I'm an explorer of sonic textures and moods (including the terrifying and the comic); at others I just line up the disco dolly tunes (little twinkle star twinkle). Expect a compilation of 70s Hindi film music in 2000.
By way of a chart, here are some of my favourites: Ali Akbar Khan, Dagarbani dhrupad, Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane, Bjrk, Steve Reich, Six Nine (Carl Craig), UR and Jeff Mills in the early days, Muslimgauze, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart. Recently, I've been made to howl, ears back, by Kid Koala, Pole and Funkstörung.
