"To Nicky the essence of a DJ is about choosing the right tune at the right time - earlier in the night he termed this being a selector. "Definitely, and that's what a selector is. It's all up here," he counters, pointing to his bonce. "You watch and you learn." In the 17 years that Nicky has spent on his manoeuvres in the groovers this, above everything else, he holds to be irrefutable. As a sprightly teenager knocking out a complete mish-mash of across the board dancefloor tunes he would conduct his local estate in the wonders of all-night partying. "I used to play with Metalheadz resident Clarky, and we would just play house parties all night long. That's where we got our roots, that's where all this shit comes from," he explains. Whether through his work as a DJ or running his shop, Blackmarket Records, Nicky's worth to the rise of dance music and most potently drum & bass, nee jungle, is inestimable. He gave jungle's disparate early strains a focal point. "
