The Sound System has a long tradition in the UK (Particularly from Reggae). From the 1960’s people would hire a hall, put in speakers, amps, effect unit and decks and crank up the music. MC’s would preside to vibe up the crowd. By the Dancehall days of the early 80’s, the MC was rapping over instrumental cuts of popular tunes.
Hip-Hop, House, and Drum & Bass have all added their flavours to the development of Sound System culture.
Over 10 years ago, ADF started as just such a Sound System, gradually evolving in to the band of the present. Back then we had turntables, percussion, sequencers and an MC. DJing was part of what we have always done, playing everything from Roots Reggae to Bhangra to Drum & Bass and Ragga.
The ADF Sound System shows are a continuation of that tradition, revolving around a mixture of ADF band members and various collaborators and friends like On-U Sounds’ Ghetto Priest.
For ADF the Sound System format allows us to reach new audiences in venues where we can’t take the full band. It is also a way of experimenting with a mixture of current tunes, rare dubplates, exclusive mixes and unreleased ADF material.
